Dearest Delegates,

Welcome to the Consiglio dei Ministri! My name is Nathan Watkins, and I will be serving as Chair of the Consiglio. Our committee is fortunate to have an incredible Crisis Staff, and I hope you are as optimistic as I am about ILMUNC.

I am a junior at Penn studying Economics with a little Mathematics, Statistics and German on the side, and I hope to end up studying Statistics in grad school one day. Foreign languages and traveling are among my interests, but I am generally content just about anywhere I can swing dance.

As you are likely aware, you, the delegates, find yourself in a rather sticky situation. Years have passed since the first economic crisis of the 21st century—well, that is, years have passed since the crisis for the rest of Europe. Italy still trails behind, waiting to gain momentum and jump on the bandwagon toward economic recovery. However, corporate corruption, political scandals and organized crime (among many, many other things) are holding the boot of Europe down. As you work “together” over these four days, I suggest you follow these few words of advice: use your positions wisely and with steadfast integrity—you would not want history to treat you poorly.

I guarantee you challenging and fruitful committee sessions and encourage you to dive into research. Please inform yourself of history, but never be afraid to get creative and give a little bit of flair your character’s past. The strongest delegates take information from their sources and adapt it to their own personalities.

Enjoy your time at ILMUNC, explore the city, and make the most of your time on the Consiglio dei Ministri! If you have any questions, please feel free to contact our USG, Yadavan Mahendraraj.

Best Regards,

Nathan Watkins

Buon giorno i delegati e benvenuti al Consiglio dei Ministri!

The illustrious Italian Republic—a hallowed land overflowing with sacred symbols of timeless religious rites and remnants from Antiquity. This land has known Caesars and emperors as well as Popes and dictators. There is no greater place to bring a curious sense of adventure and a rich appetite for a gourmet meal.

Tainting the air, which swirls around these wonders, is a political system that is wrought with corruption and wrongdoers. It is 2014 and yet, it appears that the socio-economic status of this country is likely to crumble more quickly than the statues and coliseums of two thousand years ago. Will you let this culturally rich country fall into widespread poverty and despair or will you help return it to the former glory of Octavian and Julius Caesar?

My name is Alex Haber and, as your Crisis Director, I will guide you in your attempts to turn around this backward, freefalling nation. I am a Junior, majoring in Political Science with a particular focus in International Relations, and I have been doing Model United Nations since my sophomore year of high school.

Having just spent a semester in Italy, I am extremely excited to transform my experiences into challenging crises that will be both unexpected and out of control. Be prepared for a crazy four days!

Vi vedro’ a Gennaio- arrivederci!

Topic Summary

Italy is a nation in crisis.  The infamous Prime Minister, Silvio Berlusconi, has been forced to step down in the wake of a financial crisis that threatens the stability of Italy’s damaged economy.  Power has been handed to the unelected university professor Mario Monti who is seen as the best hope to save Italy.  In a first-of-its-kind futuristic crisis format that ILMUNC is pioneering, delegates will convene in a first session that will help to set the course of the future, which they will then enter in the second session.  This truly timely and innovative committee will put delegates in a position to jump ahead two years and face down the problems that have flummoxed Italian policymakers for years.

Given that this committee is run in a revolutionary fashion that ILMUNC has chosen to pioneer, we invite those who wish to know more about the special format to contact the USG, Yadavan Mahendraraj for more information.
