Welcome to the Economic and Social Council

allie

Dear Delegates,

It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to the twenty-eight session of the Ivy League Model United Nations Conference! As your Under-Secretary-General for the Economic and Social Council, I am eager to observe your stimulating and dynamic debate. Last year, I served as the Under-Secretary-General for Specialized Agencies of ILMUNC XXVII, and two years ago as an Assistant Secretary-General of ILMUNC XXVI. The ILMUNC XXVIII Secretariat is comprised of a group of talented, passionate, and committed individuals that I have had the honor of working with for the last year to ensure that this will be your best MUN experience to date.

As for me, I am from Harrison, New York. I am a junior in the College of Arts and Sciences majoring in Political Science and Chinese. In addition to my involvement in the International Affairs Association at Penn, I also play on the Women’s Club Lacrosse team, am an intern for the Jewish Heritage Program and serve as a Peer Advisor for incoming freshmen.

This year’s chairs and staff have made a great effort to develop interesting and thought-provoking topics that will undoubtedly facilitate invigorating and comprehensive debate on a variety of vital global issues. You should look forward to interacting with your peers, as it is you the delegate who truly has the ability to make this ILMUNC the best one yet.

Throughout the conference I will be visiting each committee room to make announcements, deliver surprises, and observe debate. Please feel free to e-mail me before conference with any questions that you may have or just to introduce yourself. I had never done Model UN before college, so if this is your first conference, get excited! I am looking forward to meeting all of you in January!

Best,

Allie Kronthal

Committee Overview

Forum of Non-Governmental Organizations (New This Year)
United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (New This Year)
United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (New This Year)

The Economic and Social Council addresses substantial and critical issues in smaller, more intimate committees than those of the General Assembly. ILMUNC XXVIII is proud to feature innovative simulations such as the Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice, which will address the critical topics of piracy and political terrorism. The Forum of Non-Governmental Organizations will offer delegates the opportunity to engage in a variety of GA, ECOSOC, and Specialized committees, participating in substantive debate as a valuable source of expertise. In the United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean, delegates will discuss methods to improve regional coordination among the emerging economies of Latin America, specifically with regard to biofuels and globalization. The United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization will address issues relating to some of the most important needs of member state’s populations, such as universal access to education and cultural preservation. Finally, the United Nations International Strategy for Disaster Reduction will serve as a framework for delegates to discuss how to significantly reduce losses due to natural disasters and how to build resilient communities as an essential condition for sustainable development worldwide.
