EXXON BOARD OF DIRECTORS 1989

BACKGROUND GUIDE

Topic Summary

In March of 1989, the oil tanker Exxon Valdez ran aground and spilled millions of gallons of crude oil into Prince William Sound off the coast of Alaska. This crisis committee would follow Exxon's board of directors immediately following the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill. The board would face issues relating to clean-up and liability, as well as the largely negative media attention following the incident.

Spencer Weiss

Dear Delegates,

Welcome to ILMUNC XXXIV! My name is Spencer Weiss, and it is my pleasure to join you as the Chair of the Exxon Board of Directors. The Secretariat has been working hard since last year to put on an excellent conference, and I look forward to joining you for what will hopefully be one of the highlights of your fall semester.

To give you a bit of background about me, I am a sophomore studying bioengineering, and I am from northern Virginia, in the suburbs of Washington, D.C. I have been doing Model UN as a delegate and on the conference side for seven years. At Penn, I have traveled as a member of the intercollegiate Model UN Team and served as an Assistant Secretary-General of ILMUNC.

When I am not working with the International Affairs Association, I give seed grants to startups at Penn, work on product development for biotech companies, serve on the leadership of the engineering school and do biosciences research. I can be found around campus reading about technology business strategy and cheering on my Washington sports teams.

I am excited to work with Sid, our Crisis Director, and Vatsal, our Deputy Crisis Director, for the duration of the conference, and we hope to see some passionate debate and interesting crisis work throughout the weekend. We hope that we can overcome the weight of the world, and we can’t wait to hear your ideas play out to that end. If you have any questions about the committee or the conference, feel free to reach out to me or your USG, Veer Sobti. Good luck, and see you on the other side this winter!

Sincerely,

Spencer Weiss

Siddharth Kumar

Dear Delegates,

Welcome to the Exxon Board of Directors! My name is Siddharth, and it is my pleasure to serve as your Crisis Director for ILMUNC XXXIV. To tell you a bit about myself, I’m from Bangalore, India and study Computer Science at Penn. Outside class, I go to conferences with Penn’s MUN travel team, work with non-profits through the Hack4Impact club at Penn, and am involved with organizing Penn’s high school MUN conference, ILMUNC, in India.

As members of the board of directors of one of the world’s largest and most powerful companies, the oil industry is your playing field. Yet you will also have to work together to save Exxon in the wake of one of the most disastrous oil spills in human history. Both Spencer and I are excited to see how you can innovatively mitigate this disaster and set Exxon up for decades of success.

I hope that you will use your powers to and influence committee and leverage each crisis to the best of your ability. Will Exxon thrive and survive, or will competitors take over? The future of the oil industry lies in your hands…

Look forward to meeting you all!

Best,

Siddharth Kumar
