Welcome to Forum of Non-Governmental Organizations

Graham Ober

Dear Delegates,

Welcome to ILMUNC XXVIII and the NGO Forum. I am excited to meet everyone in January, and am confident that we have a great committee ahead of us. As a Philosophy, Politics, & Economics major, I am particularly intrigued by the role of NGO’s in the multilateral deliberations that take place in the United Nations.

To introduce myself, my name is Graham Ober, and I am a senior at the University of Pennsylvania. This is my last ILMUNC, after having served as an Assistant Secretary-General, and Vice-Chair over the past few years. Through Penn's International Affairs Association, I have had the opportunity to work with a diverse group of dynamic and talented individuals that have significantly impacted my time at Penn. When not involved in Model UN and the IAA, I stay active on the Dean's Advisory Board and with the Penn Alumni Student Society (PASS).

NGOs have an exciting and important role in international debate. In this committee, you’ll tackle various issues and have the unique opportunity to meet and work with people in many other committees. I am looking forward to working with all of you, and please do not hesitate to reach out to me if you have any questions.

Sincerely,

Graham Ober

Topic Summary

Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) have become increasingly active in the international community, as governments have been unable to meet all of their citizens’ needs. The Forum of Non-Governmental Organizations is a unique committee in that it will not be meeting to debate particular topics. Rather, delegates will represent the actual organizations that participate in United Nations debate and will petition delegates within ILMUNC’s other committees to be utilized in resolutions and make policy recommendations. Organizations represented may include CARE International, Greenpeace International, and Oxfam International. Delegates will discuss the role of NGOs in the global community today and effective public relations and marketing campaigns among themselves, in addition to choosing which committees to attend so that they maximize their contributions to debate and fulfill their NGOs’ missions.
