JOINT CRISIS COMMITTEE: RUSSIAN REVOLUTION 1917: BOLSHEVIKS

BACKGROUND GUIDE

Topic Summary

It is the year 1917 and the revolution is underfoot. The emancipation of the Russian serfs did not bring the freedom and equality it promised. Rather, the peasantry continues to receive feeble wages for hard work, minorities continue to be discriminated against through the process of "Russification" and the working class has been stripped of the right to organize or protest. The measures taken by the Russian Empire are not on the behalf of all of its occupants. Actions must be taken to make Russia a home for all, whatever it takes.

Jed Dale

Dear Delegates,

My name is Jed Dale and I will be one of your Coordinating Crisis Directors for your time navigating the Russian Revolution. This is my third and final year as a Crisis Director and I'm excited to bring you a weekend full of intrigue and excitement.

Now for a little of personal background. I'm from the small community of West Gilgo Beach, NY (if you've ever flown into JFK its on one of those narrow spits of land you see out the window). I am currently a Senior in the College of Arts and Sciences majoring in Geology and I can assure you I've heard any bad rock puns you know at least a dozen times. I started up with IAA this past year and was introduced to the labyrinthine world of model UN through my staffing of both UPMUNC and ILMUNC my freshman year.

Outside of the IAA you can find me checking out rock outcrops on the side of the interstate or playing pickup basketball. I'm excited to get to meet you all at committee and if you have any questions or concerns fell free to get in touch with me our USG Grace. Now get excited for whats sure to be an amazing committee!

All the best,

Jed Dale

Eric Zhu

Dear Delegates,

Welcome to ILMUNC! My name is Eric Zhu, and I’m honored to be serving as your CD for the Bolsheviks side of our Joint crisis committee. I’m incredibly excited for conference this year and can’t wait for y’all to see what we have planned for the weekend.

Firstly, a little about myself. I’m a junior studying Neuroscience with minors in Health Care Management and Public Policy. I was born in Beijing, China, but have lived all over the United States -- most recently glamorous, cornfed Ohio. On campus, I run the Health, Education, and Welfare division of Wharton Public Policy Initiative, and I’m a member of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity. In our very own International Affairs Association, I travel with our competitive team (#RushIntercol) and serve as the Secretary-General for ILMUNC China, our high school conference in Shanghai. MUN is an activity I only got involved with in college, but somehow it’s kept me coming back again and again, and I’ve loved every moment of it.

We’re about to dunk y’all knee-deep into one of the most revolutionary times in world history. Russia stands amidst deep internal conflict, economic stagnation and a failing Tsarist government. The people cry out for change. Will you listen and rise in rebellion? Or will the great people of Russia collapse? Chia and I can’t wait to see how y’all will work collaboratively toward these mutual goals (or not). If y’all have any questions or concerns at all about the committee, please do not hesitate to reach out to me. I look forward to seeing you this spring!

Cheers,

Eric Zhu

Chia Game

Dear Delegates,

Welcome to the JCC Bolsheviks! My name is Lucia Game, but I’m better known as Chia(yes like the pets or the seeds). I am very excited to be your chair for this committee, and can’t wait to see what polemic and creative ideas you bring to our committee.

A little bit about myself, I am a Junior in the School of Engineering and Applied Science majoring in Systems and Science engineering. Growing up, I moved around between Washington DC and different countries in South America such as Colombia, Bolivia, and Ecuador where my family is originally from. I am a huge MUN geek, and during my time at Penn I’ve had the honor of being part of the International Affairs Association family. Apart from staffing ILMUNC, I am Business Director of Ilmunc India. When I’m not hanging out with my IAA family, I also work as a student researcher working on drone mapping and city planning in Philadelphia. I am also a huge Netflix addict and love nothing more than to eat and dance to Latin music.

We are all are very excited to bring the JCC Russian Revolution to ILMUNC. I can’t wait to see what you will all do when discussing this important event in worlwide politics. Eric, Jed, and I along with ILMUNC 34th secretariat, have worked very hard to make this committee as great as possible, and I hope you enjoy as much as we have.

Can’t wait to meet all of you!

Sincerely,

Chia Game
