PRESS CORPS

BACKGROUND GUIDE
Rachel Liu

Dear Delegates,

I am incredibly excited to welcome you to the 34th session of the Ivy League Model United Nations Conference. My name is Rachel, and I will be serving as your chair for Press Corps specialized agency committee this weekend. Get ready for a weekend filled with political tension, energizing debate and fun! Your Moderator Zach and I have worked hard to make sure this committee is one worth looking forward to.

To provide a brief background, I am a member of Penn’s Class of 2020, majoring in PPE (Philosophy, Political Science, Economics) in the College of Arts and Sciences. Born in Taiwan but bred in Hong Kong, I received a British high school education but have an American accent – probably because I watched a lot of Simpsons as a kid. While I have had considerable debate experience back home, I was able to transfer my knowledge and interest of Asian affairs into the MUN platform here in the States ever since I staffed my first UPMUNC Conference. I am now part of the intercollegiate traveling team, having been a part of the circuit for more than a semester now. Outside of MUN, I am part of Wharton Asia Exchange and Seneca International, a female empowerment advocacy group. In my spare time, I love watching TV shows (Suits anyone?), exploring Philly restaurants, and hanging out with friends.

I have the utmost belief that being part of this committee will stimulate you to not only create innovative crisis tracks that will propel your personal ambitions as members of the Press Corps, but also encourage you to see how you can create interesting dialogue among other committees that you will be reporting on.

In the coming few months, your Moderator and I will be preparing a fun-filled but intense committee for you. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out to me, your Moderator Zach, or your USG Owen. Looking forward to meeting you!

Sincerely,

Rachel Liu

Zach Jacobs

Dear Delegates,

My name is Zach Jacobs, and I’m so excited to be a Moderator for the Press Corps Committee at ILMUNC XXXIV with my co-chair Rachel Liu!

I’m a sophomore at Penn studying Political Science, and I first came to ILMUNC during my senior year in high school as a delegate. This is the first committee I’ll be helping lead, and I’m very excited that it’s the Press Corps committee. I’m very interested in how the press can work to create a more informed society, and how the press can work together to more effectively question governing bodies like the United Nations to make sure that our global leaders are being held accountable. I think that activities like Model UN can not only help us better understand entities like the press, but create models for how a more healthy, functional press can be achieved, and this is why I’m so happy to be chairing this committee.

If you have any questions between now and the conference (or after the conference, if you have questions about admissions or college life), please feel free to email me at zjacobs@sas.upenn.edu.

If you have any questions or concerns I encourage you to reach out to your fabulous USG, Rong Xiang. Get ready for the best of ILMUNC guys!

See you at ILMUNC,

Zach Jacobs
