Welcome to United Nations Children's Fund

Dear Delegates,

Welcome to the United Nations Children¡¯s Fund at the twenty-seventh session of the Ivy League Model United Nations Conference! My name is Aditi Marisetti, and it is my pleasure to serve as Chair of what will no doubt be one of the most interesting and dynamic committees at this year¡¯s conference. A little background about myself: I am a senior studying International Relations in the College of Arts and Sciences. I am originally from Toronto, Canada, and yes, I do love hockey. I joined Model UN at the beginning of my freshman year of college, and I have been hooked ever since.

Our committee this year will focus on two important topics: Child Labor and Malnutrition in Times of Emergency. Both topics are extremely pertinent and are major humanitarian issues of the 21st century, and so I look forward to hearing your innovative and creative solutions to the problems at hand. In order to ensure that all members of the committee have an exciting and interesting four-day experience through lively debate and successful resolution writing, I recommend taking time to thoroughly research the history and position of your country in regards to the issues.

Feel free to contact me at any time if you have questions regarding the committee, ILMUNC, Penn, or just want to say hi! I look forward to meeting you all at ILMUNC XXVII!

Sincerely,

Aditi Marisetti

Chair, UNICEF

Topic Summaries

Topic A

Child Labor

Child labor is a problem that does not discriminate between developed and developing nations. As a tremendously pervasive plague affecting countries collectively, it is undoubtedly an issue that deserves carefully analysis and consideration. There are currently 218 million child laborers, according to the Human Rights Watch, occurring in a variety of places and forms. In certain cases, the health and education of a child under these deplorable circumstances are only some of the consequences of this forced employment. Indeed, the health of an entire nation is at risk and can be substantially affected by child labor, which results in never-ending cycles of prolonged poverty. Certainly, such a delicate issues requires this committee to analyze the complexity of the subject by pinpointing how certain countries propagate the problem, and crafting action plans and policies that will counteract and tackle the issue.

Topic B

Malnutrition in Times of Emergency

It is alarming to note that malnutrition accounts for over fifty-three percent of deaths in children suffering from infectious diseases. As the deplorable health of children suffering from malnourishment continues to weaken a country¡¯s economic development and social structure, emergency situations further add to the alarming state of a nation suffering from this diseases. Nutrition and security overlap in a frightening way, causing a tragic condition to be further stressed by both situations at the point in which help is most critically required. Among the most vulnerable populations suffering from these circumstances are pregnant and breast-feeding mothers, who require immediate global acknowledgment. Hence, it is the responsibility of this committee to craft viable solutions designed to support struggling families during these times of emergency, while specifically targeting infants and children who are most poignantly affected throughout their entire lives by these enduring causes.
