Welcome to World Health Organization

Dear Delegates,

Welcome to the World Health Organization of the Ivy League Model United Nations Conference 2010. My name is Amy Silverstein, and I will be chairing the committee.

First, I will tell you a little about myself. I am a junior in the School of Engineering and Applied Science pursuing a degree in Bioengineering and a double minor in history and nanotechnology. Although my major has absolutely nothing to do with international affairs, I have participated in Mode UN for about seven years and still absolutely love it. Outside of Model UN, I am also involved with the Club Tennis team, the Engineering Dean’s Advisory Board, and a research lab on campus.

The entire Dais has been working extremely hard to prepare for the conference, and I hope each of you will do the same. This way, we will be able to have stimulating debate that leads to high quality resolutions. Please take advantage of the wealth of information in the background guide, but be sure to do some research on your own. I look forward to seeing all of you in January for a weekend of fun and hard work.

Dear Delegates,

Welcome to the World Health Organization! My name is Elena Blebea and I am delighted to serve as your moderator for ILMUNC 2010. I am a senior at Penn with a double major in Hispanic Studies and Health and Societies, concentrating in International Health. I have been involved with Model UN since high school as both a delegate and member of the dais and cannot wait to see what kind of debate will occur in this exciting committee.

As John F. Kennedy noted in 1963 in a speech to the General Assembly, "Never before has man had such capacity to control his own environment, to end thirst and hunger, to conquer poverty and disease, to banish illiteracy and massive human misery.

This committee will hopefully find some creative and pragmatic methods to alleviate the problems of pharmaceutical trials in developing populations and multiple drug resistance. I highly encourage everyone to come fully prepared and enthusiastic about discussing these globally significant issues.

I look forward to meeting all of you and hope this conference allows you to have some lively debate, learn new things, and most importantly have a good time!

Sincerely,

Elena Blebea
