Dear Delegates,

Welcome to the Special Political and Decolonization Committee at the 36th Ivy League Model United Nations Conference. My name is Mahak Sethi, and I am so excited to be serving as your Moderator.

I am currently a junior in the Wharton School of Business, planning to concentrate in Operations, Information, and Decisions and Management. Academically, I also take great interest in political science, art history, and Korean. I love participating on Penn’s Model United Nations Team, Intercol, and have had previous experience moderating for ILMUNC and chairing for UPMUNC, Penn’s conference for college students.  I also had the pleasure of serving as Chief of Staff for ILMUNC-India. Outside of MUN, I love listening to music, watching reruns of “How I Met Your Mother” and “Parks and Rec”, and drinking boba with friends.

I am thrilled to be moderating a committee that deals with such a wide array of political issues. Our first topic, International cooperation for the peaceful uses of outer space, interprets SPECPOL’s powers in a unique way. With the growing number of actors in space, it is essential that a comprehensive solution is employed in order to prevent its militarization.

This committee frequently deals with issues surrounding the Middle East, and this time is no exception with Topic B handling relief for Palestinian refugees. This is a sensitive topic and deals with the broader Israel-Palestine conflict. The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East reports through SPECPOL to the General Assembly and supports more than 5 million refugees. The UNRWA has been criticized for perpetuating the status quo and not coming up with a long-term solution to this problem. I hope you find this background guide to be informative. I look forward to seeing how you all address these issues!

Sincerely,

Moiz Ali Jehangir
