73RD CONGRESS OF THE UNITED STATES
Download Background Guide

Topic A: New Deal
Topic B: US Response to Growing European Powers

Committee Intro

The year is 1933 and the future of the great American nation had never been more bleak. Following the stock market of 1929, the United States was plunged into a depression whose magnitude had never been seen. Couple that with Benito Mussolini's scrapping of Italy’s democracy in 1925 and the rise of fascist ideas all around Europe and the outlook of the American people was understandably dark. Luckily for this Democratic majority Senate, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt had just been inaugurated. The Democratic Party now owned the Senate, the House, and the White House. It’s time for action. This committee will address controversial and innovative solutions to solve an economic crisis. This committee will discuss the rising powers in Europe and establish America’s role in a new era internationally. With America in its weakened state the stakes have never been higher. A 44-year-old man with fascist tendencies has just been appointed as German Chancellor.

Dear Delegates,

Welcome to the 73rd Congress of the United States Committee. You will be coming to a weekend with people hailing from every inch of the globe to discuss the issues of privacy and propaganda, issues that stand the test of time. As members of this committee, I want to see constructive discourse in a time when the world’s future was uncertain.

My name is Thomas, but you can call me Tommy or whatever you want other than “pinko.” I’m a second year student in the Huntsman Program in International Studies and Business (Dual degree between College of Arts and Sciences and Wharton) studying Finance, Real Estate, and Chinese. I’m from the heartland of America, reigning from Columbus, Ohio. Within Penn’s International Affairs Association, I compete on our Intercollegiate Model UN Team (Intercol). Outside of the IAA, I am a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon, a hiking leader for Penn’s pre-orientation program, PennQuest, and a member of Men Against Rape and Sexual Assault.

I want this weekend to be a good one for everyone, and as a delegate myself, I know conferences can be stressful. Feel free to loosen up in my committee, maybe make a joke or two, and have some fun yourself. I know that I will.

So welcome to 35th Ivy League Model United Nations Conference and welcome to the 73rd Congress of the United States Committee. I can’t wait to work together with all of you this coming January. If you have any questions about the committee, I can be reached at tpollack@wharton.upenn.edu.

Best,

Thomas Pollack

Dear Delegates,

I am incredibly excited to welcome you to ILMUNC XXXV and Philadelphia! This conference has been almost a year in the making and the entire ILMUNC staff is so excited to have you join us.

Just a few words about myself – I was born and raised in the city of avocado toast (also known as Los Angeles) and coming to Philly has been a major lesson in dressing in layers and dealing with snow. I love exploring all that Philly has to offer and trying to find comparable food to LA. As a member of the Class of 2021 in the Huntsman Program, I study International Studies and Business, as well as Russian Studies and Modern Middle East Studies. Although I was exclusively a Lincoln-Douglas debater in high school, I joined the IAA, in particular the Special Events branch, as a freshman and I am beyond grateful for the family that the IAA has become. Alongside the IAA, I am also a member of the Global Research and Consulting club, the Financial Literacy Community Project, and an active member of Penn Hillel.

We’re particularly lucky because of the Specialized Committees’ smaller size which will allow us to get to know each other over the course of the weekend. The entire ILMUNC Secretariat has put an unimaginable amount of time and work into making this conference experience incredible and we hope you come prepared and ready to have an amazing time. Your chair, Tommy, and I cannot wait to meet you and make ILMUNC XXXV the best conference yet!

Best,

Allison Gorokhovsky
