Association of Southeast Asian Nations

Approximately 40 Delegations - Double Delegate
Topic A: The Militarization of the South China Sea
Topic B: Navigating U.S.-China Trade Tensions

Background Guide

Welcome to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Committee! Over the course of the next week, delegates in this forum will focus on two pivotal geopolitical topics: The Militarization of the South China Sea and Navigating U.S.-China Trade Tensions. In tackling the first topic, delegates will strategize on diplomatic and legal pathways to de-escalate tensions, manage maritime disputes, and maintain peace, stability, and freedom of navigation in the region's vital waterways. The second topic invites delegates to critically assess how ASEAN member states can collectively mitigate the economic fallout and political pressures resulting from the ongoing trade and technology rivalry between the United States and China. Together, this committee will seek advanced, strategic pathways to advance ASEAN's objectives and promote a thriving, stable Southeast Asia.

DEAR DELEGATES,

Welcome to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) committee at ILMUNC! My name is Lui Gardner, and I am excited to serve as your Co-Chair as we begin what promises to be a thought-provoking and engaging conference.

ASEAN sits at the center of some of the most significant conversations in global politics today. Over the course of our sessions, we will focus on two critical issues: the militarization of the South China Sea and the shifting trade relationship between the United States and China. Both topics test the balance between security and economic cooperation, and I look forward to the insights and solutions you will bring to the debate.

I am currently a junior at the University of Pennsylvania studying Economics. My interests range from technology and entrepreneurship to public policy and international relations, and I have always enjoyed exploring how these areas connect. Outside of academics, I spend my time hiking, skiing, cooking, and listening to new music.

Along with Grace and Will, I am looking forward to working with all of you. Please feel free to reach out with any questions as you prepare for the committee. I hope this experience will be both rewarding and memorable.

DEAR DELEGATES,

It is my pleasure to welcome you to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) committee at ILMUNC! My name is Will Koo, and I am honored to serve as your Co-Chair as we dive into timely and dynamic discussions that highlight the complexities of regional cooperation and global affairs.

ASEAN finds itself at the center of today’s most urgent geopolitical questions. This year’s agenda will focus on two critical challenges: the rising militarization of the South China Sea and the shifting trade dynamics between the United States and China. These issues not only shape the region’s security but also its economic resilience. I look forward to seeing the innovative perspectives and solutions you bring to these pressing debates.

A little about me - I am a senior in the College of Arts and Sciences studying Philosophy, Politics, & Economics, and am originally from Saddle River, NJ. I participated in Model UN in high school, and while I never got to be a part of ILMUNC, Model UN was a great experience for me and I’m excited to bring that experience to all of you. This will be my third year being involved with ILMUNC, where I was just previously an Under Secretary General. Outside of MUN, I’m on the Penn Men’s Club Soccer Team and am also involved with Penn Policy Consulting. In my free time, I love going on runs and eating food.

Grace, Lui, and I are thrilled to be working with you in ASEAN. Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions about the committee - we’re here to help you prepare for a rewarding and engaging experience.
