United Nations Security Council

Approximately 20 Delegations - Double Delegate

Welcome to the United Nations Security Council Crisis Committee on the Second Korean Crisis at ILMUNC XLII. Once again, tensions on the Korean Peninsula are rising and a second Korean war looks concerningly possible. North Korea’s nuclear testing program is pushing the boundaries of international tolerance, South Korea is aggressively asserting claims in oil-rich waters, domestic political tensions are boiling over on both sides of the DMZ, and that’s just scratching the surface. The escalation of this decades-old conflict is now more complex, and dangerous, than ever before. As members of the UNSC, you will be forced to navigate your historical alliances with both Koreas as well as invested powers such as the United States and China, all while securing your own interests. The balance of peace sits in your hands. Will you secure stability, or ensure that war breaks out?

Dear Delegates,

I am excited to welcome you to the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) Committee of ILMUNC XLII! My  name is Bernardo Nascimento, and as your chair I look forward to guiding you through  engaging, fun, and dynamic crisis experience.

Unlike a traditional General Assembly committee, crisis committees are made to be fast-paced  and unpredictable in order to test delegates’ ability to think on their feet, make strategic  maneuvers, and use the powers at their hands.

Within reason, anything and everything goes in a crisis committee, and whether you choose to remain in Rome, return to Avignon, or completely reshape the papacy, the future of the Catholic Church and its unity is in your hands

As for me, I am a sophomore in the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences studying  Mechanical Engineering. I’m from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and have been competing in MUN  conferences since my freshman year of high school. This will be my second year chairing for  ILMUNC, and I hope you enjoy this interesting committee! Outside of MUN, I’m a part of  Penn’s High-Powered Rocketry team and like designing planes, and in my free time I love  playing guitar, listening to bossa nova, and eating Panda Express.

Milan, Jameson, and I are all looking forward to working with you in this crisis committee.  Don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions!

Dear Delegates,

Welcome to Philadelphia and to ILMUNC! I’m Jameson Russell, a Sophomore at Penn, and I am very excited to be the Crisis Director for your committee.

As our committee name suggests, we will be simulating the Second Korean Crisis — a contentious, and technically still ongoing, conflict. As North and South Korea continue to fight over disputed territories, and with the United Nations Security Council being involved earlier on, it is up to you to navigate the tensions, relationships, and nuclear advancements that have developed. In essence, the future of the world is in your hands.

1378 Papal Conclave — a contentious and historic election. As French and Italian Cardinals fought over where the papacy should reside, there was simultaneous debate over church doctrine and its influence. Playing the roles of various Cardinals, officials, and royal envoys, I urge you to be creative and to use history to your advantage. The future of the Catholic Church is in your hands.

Here’s a little bit about myself. I’m a Sophomore in the College of Arts and Sciences from Westport, Connecticut. I’m majoring in Philosophy, Politics and Economics (it’s just one major) and minoring in Legal Studies and Chinese. Outside of class, I’m involved with INTERCOL, Penn’s travelling Model UN team, and I also edit for the Penn Undergraduate Law Journal. In my free time, you’ll find me in the gym, at all-you-can-eat hotpot restaurants, on the golf course, or at sports games (hockey and baseball are my favorite).

Good luck in your preparation — Milan, Bernardo and I can’t wait to meet all of you! Sincerely,

Jameson Russell

Dear Delegates,

Welcome to ILMUNC. My name is Milan Bhayana, and I can’t wait to serve as one of your chairs for the United Nations Security Council. This year, our committee will delve into one of the most perilous crises of the 21st century — the possible outbreak of a Second Korean War.

In order to succeed in this committee, Delegates should demonstrate deep understanding of historical context in the Korean Peninsula, competing national interests, and the complexities of modern warfare — including the cyber, drone, and information domains. Resolutions should balance realism with humanitarian concern and consider both immediate crisis management and long-term regional stability. Personally, I’m looking for grounded concepts but creative speeches.

This committee will test your diplomatic acumen, strategic thinking, and moral resolve: remember that the world is watching, and history will be written by those who act wisely.

In regards to me: I’m currently a sophomore at Penn studying Politics, Philosophy and Economics. I’m a member of INTECOL, Penn’s model UN team, as well as Penn’s tour guide society, Kite and Key. Outside of coursework, I’m passionate about cooking, board games, and the Buffalo Bills. I’m looking forward to meeting you all, and co-chairing this committee with Bernardo and Jameson.

Please feel free to reach out with any questions leading up to the conference. We’re here to support you every step of the way. See you soon!
