Economic and Financial Committee

Approximately 95 Delegations - Double Delegate
Topic A: Safeguarding Global Economic Stability Amid Trade Uncertainty
Topic B: Regulating Cryptocurrency and Digital Assets

Background Guide

Welcome to ECOFIN, where delegates are going to deal with the issue of global economic stability at the time of trade and geopolitical problems and fast technological changes. While countries are switching to protectionist measures and developing new supply lines, economic systems are being disrupted by automation and others. Governments will try to find ways to keep the economy growing by being inclusive and providing resilience. The delegates will study how institutions like the IMF, World Bank, and WTO can change their operational models according to the latest challenges, help reduce inequalities and make the necessary changes to the global financial system to regain trust in the cooperation of multiple states. They will also offer solutions through a heated discussion that at the same time will be balanced and futuristic and will secure for the world the sustainable development, fair trade, and economic security in the long run that are essential in this increasingly interconnected world.

Dear Delegates,

Welcome to ILMUNC XLII! My name is Leanne Griffiths and I’ll be your Crisis Director for the ECOFIN Committee. On behalf of me and your staffers, I would like to express how excited we are to welcome you to the conference! I am honored to help guide you through

this complex and pressing issue that sits at the intersection of cryptocurrency and trade regulation.

The global economy, long seen as an engine of growth and interconnected prosperity, now faces a period of profound uncertainty. Rising trade tensions, fluctuating markets, and fragile supply chains have challenged assumptions about stability and cooperation. At the same time, the rapid expansion of cryptocurrencies and digital assets has introduced both unprecedented opportunities and risks, raising urgent questions about regulation, security, and economic equity. What was once viewed as a frontier for innovation has become a contested arena for governments, financial institutions, and private actors alike. ECOFIN has a critical role to play in ensuring that these shifts do not undermine global stability. As delegates, you will be tasked with navigating the competing priorities of open markets and national protections, addressing the challenges posed by unregulated digital finance, and charting a course toward an international economic system that is resilient, equitable, and secure.

In regards to my background information: I’m currently a junior in the College of Arts and Sciences studying History and Political Science, concentrating in International Relations. Additionally, I intend to minor in French and Legal Studies on the Pre-Law track. I’m also Co Chief of Staff in INTERCOL, the University of Pennsylvania’s collegiate Model UN team. Outside of MUN, I am an executive member of the Kite and Key Tour Guide Society, Penn Chorale, Director of SPEV (special events branch of the International Affairs Association, and a member of a panhellenic sorority. On weekends and after class I can be found taking the beloved trolley into center city to get to Trader Joes on 22nd street, walking the Schuylkill River trail or around Rittenhouse Square, and going on endless dinner dates with friends, thanks to the INSANE food scene here.

Originally from the Princeton area of New Jersey, I thoroughly enjoy my new home-city of Philadelphia (except for the Sixers), and have quickly grown to love attending Penn. Hurrah, Hurrah! I’m incredibly excited to extend a warm welcome to you all at ILMUNC this January. Please feel free to email me or your chair regarding questions about committee. We’ll see you in January!

Dear Delegates,

I am thrilled to welcome you to the Economic and Financial Committee (ECOFIN) of ILMUNC XLII! My name is William Dalton, and as one of your chairs, I am excited to guide you through engaging discussions on two pressing global issues: Safeguarding Global Economic Stability Amid Trade Uncertainty and Regulating Cryptocurrency and Digital Assets. These topics sit at

the center of today’s most urgent economic debates, and I look forward to hearing your creative approaches to tackling them.

As for me, I’m currently a junior at the Wharton School, studying Finance and AI for Business. On campus, I serve as one of the Vice Presidents for the Wharton Undergraduate Consulting Club, Executive Cohort Director for Wharton Cohorts, and a Project Lead for Locust Walk Consulting Group. I’m also a Board Member for INTERCOL, Penn’s intercollegiate Model UN team, and a Teaching Assistant for WH2010: Business Communication. Beyond that, I work as a Writing Fellow for the Marks Family Writing Center, a Penn Abroad Ambassador, a Campus Director for the Millennium Fellowship, and as a Shift Captain for the Kite & Key Society.

Outside of academics, I’m a twin, a lifelong Star Wars fan, and a basketball enthusiast who loves exploring Philadelphia’s restaurant scene (even with a long list of food allergies). Philly has become my second home, and I can’t wait to welcome you all here for ILMUNC this January.

My fellow dais members and I are committed to making this committee both rigorous and rewarding. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to me or any of your staffers with questions about the topics, background guide, or committee logistics. We can’t wait to meet you all and see the thoughtful, dynamic debate you bring to ECOFIN!

Best,

William Dalton
