International Atomic Energy Agency

Approximately 80 Delegations - Single Delegate
Topic A: The Future of the NPT Regime
Topic B: Preventing Nuclear Terrorism

Background Guide

Welcome to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) for ILMUNC XLII! In this specialized committee, delegates will engage in discussions on the future of the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) regime and strategies for preventing nuclear terrorism. Participants will evaluate the effectiveness of existing non-proliferation frameworks, assess emerging threats from non-state actors, and explore ways to secure nuclear materials while promoting peaceful uses of nuclear technology. Through diplomatic dialogue and cooperation, delegates will seek actionable solutions to strengthen global nuclear security and uphold international stability.

Dear Delegates,

It’s a pleasure to welcome you to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) at ILMUNC! My name is Khalil and it’s an honor to serve as your moderator. Throughout our sessions, I look forward to fostering engaging debates and meaningful collaboration as we address the complex challenges of global peace and security.

In 1957 amidst the cold war and the accelerated nuclear proliferation, the IAEA was founded as the world's centre for cooperation in the nuclear field. Promoting the safe, secure and peaceful use of nuclear technologies is its main mission, striking a delicate balance between global security and the advancement of peaceful nuclear applications.

Before we begin, honorable delegates, I invite you to close your eyes and imagine a world without a Non-Proliferation Treaty where every state is free to acquire and use nuclear weapons. The consequences would be catastrophic. It is precisely to prevent such a scenario that we gather here today and I look forward to your ideas, collaboration, and constructive debate as we work together to strengthen international peace and security.

Allow me to briefly introduce myself. I am a sophomore pursuing a dual degree between the College of Arts and Sciences, where I study Political Science with a focus on International Relations, and the Wharton School, where I concentrate in Statistics. I was born and raised in Tunis, Tunisia, and I am trilingual. Over the past few years, I have participated in more than 50 Model UN conferences in Tunisia and helped organize several of them, though this will be my first experience at an American conference. Academically, I am particularly interested in nuclear studies within the field of international relations, and outside the classroom I am currently engaged in two research projects; one in international political economy and another in philanthropy management. Beyond academics, I enjoy lively discussions, building with LEGO and reading in my free time (I do not read English novels) .

My fellow moderators and I are all looking forward to working with you in this exciting committee. Please feel free to reach out with any questions or concerns.

Dear Delegates,

I am delighted to welcome you to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) of ILMUNC! My name is Nicole Chung, and as the moderator I look forward to guiding you through stimulating discussions to promote the safe and secure use of nuclear technologies.

The IAEA assists its Member States in the planning and usage of nuclear science and technology for peaceful purposes by ensuring that States are compliant with their commitments under the Non-Proliferation Treaty and other agreements. It also develops nuclear safety standards and promotes the maintenance of safety in the application of nuclear energy.

I am a junior in the College of Arts and Sciences majoring in Neuroscience on the pre-med track. I’m originally from Hong Kong but now live in Connecticut. Outside of ILMUNC, I work in two labs focusing on Friedreich's Ataxia and hypertriglyceridemia. I run marathons and cross-country and am involved in Greek life on campus. It’s my third ILMUNC and I’m determined to make this the best one!

Moe, Khalil, and I are all looking forward to working with you in the DISEC committee. Don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions.
