United Nations Space Resource Authority (2080)

Approximately 40 Delegations - Double Delegate
Topic A: Terraforming vs. Conservation
Topic B: Preventing the Militarization of Mining Sites

Background Guide

Welcome to the Space Resource Authority for ILMUNC XLII! Set in 2080, delegates will confront the dual challenges of terraforming versus conservation and preventing the militarization of space mining sites. Participants will examine the ethical and environmental implications of altering extraterrestrial environments while also addressing the need for security frameworks to avoid conflict over space resources. Through dialogue and innovation, delegates will work to propose sustainable policies that balance exploration, resource utilization, and peace in the rapidly developing domain of outer space.

Dear Delegates,

Dear Delegates,

I’m thrilled to welcome you all to the Space Resource Agency at ILMUNC XLII! My name is Shivani, and as one of your co-chairs, I’m excited to help facilitate thought-provoking debates on how we can work toward lasting peace and shared prosperity beyond our planet.

Our committee examines how nations can cooperate to ensure the peaceful exploration of outer space and use space technologies to drive sustainable development here on Earth. Achieving this vision is a collaborative endeavor, with both global and regional bodies playing vital roles. Regional organizations, in particular, bring unique perspectives since they are closest to the challenges and opportunities of their member states. I can’t wait to hear your innovative proposals on how international and regional actors can responsibly govern space resource activities for the benefit of all.

A little bit about myself, I am a current Sophomore in the Engineering school studying Computer Science. I am from Atlanta, Georgia and was an avid Model UN enthusiastic in high school! I am excited to chair my first conference with ILMUNC at Penn this year and hope youall have an amazing experience.

Debby, Sage, and I are all looking forward to working with you in the Space Resource Agency committee. Please reach out if you have any questions!

Dear Delegates,

I am excited to welcome you to the Space Resource Agency of ILMUNC XLII! My name is Sage Mehta, and as a co-chair I look forward to guiding you through engaging and impactful discussions that explore various aspects of interstellar peace and prosperity.

The Space Resource Agency focuses on topics promoting international cooperation in the peaceful use of outer space and leveraging space technology for sustainable development. This is a collective effort that relies on the effective functioning of both international and regional organizations. Regional organizations play a crucial role in maintaining peace and security within their respective regions, as they are closer to the issues facing the member states. I look forward to hearing your ideas on how to best regulate and address activities that nation-states and regional entities may pursue in pursuit of space resources.

A little bit about me, I am a Senior in the College of Arts and Sciences studying Philosophy, Politics, & Economics, with minors in Data Science and Astrophysics. I am from Carmel, Indiana, and have worked extensively in federal and international policy. This will be my first conference that I have helped to plan with ILMUNC at Penn. I hope that you all have an enriching and valuable experience!

Debby, Shivani, and I are all looking forward to working with you in the Space Resource Agency committee. Don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions!

Dear Delegates,

I am excited to welcome you to the Space Resource Agency of ILMUNC XLII! My name is Debby Armstrong, and I look forward to chairing your committee and guiding you through engaging and impactful discussions that explore various aspects of international peace and security.

I am a senior in the College of Arts and Sciences studying history with a minor in chemistry on the premed track. I’m from Philadelphia, and this is my third ILMUNC conference I have helped with. Outside of ILMUNC, I am involved in a variety of clubs and organizations on campus, including mental health clubs, our tour guide society, and research on campus. I love tennis, hiking, surfing, baking, and skiing, and try to enjoy the outdoors as much as possible! I previously participated in my high school’s Model UN club, and I wanted to be a part of creating the dynamic, interesting, and thrilling committee sessions for other high school students.

ILMUNC serves as the perfect environment, where participants can improve and hone their debate skills, teamwork, and gain a better understanding of different international perspectives, including how various governments approach technology and global/space expansion. Our committee fosters an environment that promotes discussion and advocacy for human, social, and economic equity. I encourage delegates to examine how various government policies and structures affect disempowered citizens and present creative solutions to universal problems. I hope this committee explores the nuances of political and social discourse within the confines of space, technology, engineering, science, and global cooperation while creating a respectful and tolerant environment. I am most excited for everyone to explore the city, meet new and diverse people, and immerse themselves in this challenging yet rewarding weekend!

Sage, Shivani, and I are all looking forward to working with you in the Space Resource Agency committee. Don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions regarding the committee.
